Cooling centres available during Code Red
Residents facing extreme heat at home can visit various cooling centres across the city today and tomorrow. These centres are available to people who are unable to find a place to cool down on their own. The council is providing these cooling centres in collaboration with partners because a Code Red warning is in force today and tomorrow due to the extreme heat.
Opening of council buildings
People who urgently need to cool down and have nowhere else to go are welcome at the following council buildings:
Centre Céramique, 50 Avenue Céramique. Open on Friday from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm and on Saturday from 10.00 am to 5.00 pm.
Mosae Forum, Mosae Forum 10. Open on Friday from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm and on Saturday from 10.00 am to 5.00 pm (entrance via the Meuse side, not via Gubbelstraat).
Residents are offered water here. Coffee and tea are available. No activities are organised. First aid is available if required.
Envida residential care homes open
Vulnerable elderly people are welcome to spend a few hours in the communal areas of six Envida residential care homes:
De Mins, Ponjaardruwe 91
Herculeshof, Herculeshof 20
Larisa, Polvertorenstraat 20
Koepelhof, Koepelstraat 84
De zeven Bronnen, Lovendaalhoeve 30
Croonenhoff, Veldstraat 18A
Envida is offering older people the chance to temporarily escape the heat and enjoy a drink or snack. No other care will be provided by staff (with the exception of first aid).
Community centres open
A number of community centres are air-conditioned and will be open (for extended hours) over the coming days:
Nazareth Community Centre, Miradorplein 39: open on Friday from 13:00 to 17:00.
Het Ruweel Community Centre, Malbergsingel 62: open on Friday and Saturday from 8.00 am to 8.00 pm
Wittevrouwenveld Community Centre: open on Saturday from 1.00 pm to 4.00 pm
Amyerhoof, Severenplein 27: open on Friday from 11.30 am to 4.00 pm.
No activities are taking place during these opening hours. However, volunteers or a manager will be present to welcome people and provide them with water, coffee or tea.
Transport available via Omnibuzz
For people who wish to travel to one of the above locations today but do not have their own transport or a travel pass, Omnibuzz is making an exception. They can still book a journey via Omnibuzz today by calling 0900-0699 (bookings must be made 1 hour in advance). This applies exclusively to journeys from home to the specified locations and vice versa.
Passengers with an Omnibuzz travel pass can, of course, also book a journey. However, they are not restricted to any of the locations mentioned above.
For enquiries about the cooling centres, residents can contact the council today on 14043. With these measures, the council is offering a cooler alternative to those who do not have sufficient facilities at home to escape the heat.

Event: 24 Hours of Maastricht (beer tasting).
Due to the expected high temperatures and the Code Red weather warning, it has been decided to adjust the start time of The 24 Hours of Maastricht.
The event will go ahead as planned, but will not start at 14.00, as previously announced. The new start time is 17.00.
With this change, the organisers aim to safeguard the safety and well-being of visitors, stallholders, volunteers and staff as much as possible. Given the expected temperatures, the organisers do not consider it responsible to allow the programme to begin in the full midday sun.
Visitors are advised to drink plenty of water, wear light, breathable clothing and take the heat into account. (source: organisers via Facebook)
