### 1.        From Bèr to Beppie: experience Maastricht’s City Parade

On Sunday 13 September, the highlight of the Maastricht Year 2026 will take place:
the grand City Parade. A festive day on which Maastricht’s history comes to life
at various locations across the city.

From 2.00 pm, there will be performances and activities at 12 locations centred
around special moments, people and events from Maastricht’s history. Expect dance,
singing, acrobatics, historical figures and special acts, amongst other things.

At 5.00 pm, the participants will gather and, led by the skeleton of the mosasaur
Bèr, set off in a grand procession towards the Markt.

There, from 19.30, the day will draw to a musical close with well-known Maastricht
artists, including Beppie Kraft, who will perform Maastricht’s most beloved evergreens
together.

Entry to all activities is free.

The City Parade is inspired by the historic procession organised by Fons Olterdissen
in 1905 and, just as then, is all about bringing people together, collaboration
and the rich history of our city.

View the full programme, locations and participants on the Maastricht City Council
website.

Together with other Maastricht residents, you’ll be building cardboard components
at the Bonnefanten Museum for a life-size version of the former Cité Ouvrière, better
known in Maastricht as the Groete Bouw. On Saturday 12 September, all the components
will be assembled together to form an impressive monument on the Vrijthof.

The free workshops last approximately 3.5 hours and are open to anyone aged 15 and
over. You can register individually, or as an association, foundation, school or
group. A maximum of 35 participants can take part per session

Fancy taking part?

Register for one or more sessions via the Bonnefanten website:

On Saturday 12 September, the joint construction will take place on the Vrijthof.

Not sure where to report an issue? The new reporting card from Maastricht City Council

damage in a public space, digital fraud or problems at home.

In an emergency, call **112**. For animals in distress, call **144**. You can report
nuisance or damage to outdoor facilities via the **BuitenBeter app**, via [gemeentemaastricht.nl/iets-melden](https://www.gemeentemaastricht.nl/iets-melden)

The reporting card is available in **Dutch, English and Arabic** and can be downloaded
from [binnenstadmaastricht.nl](https://binnenstadmaastricht.nl/en/municipal-registration-card/).
This will enable as many residents as possible to quickly find the right help or
organisation.

We wish you a pleasant rest of your summer holidays and hope to welcome you soon
at one of our events in the Sterzaal.

**Residents facing extreme heat at home can visit various cooling centres across
the city today and tomorrow. These centres are available to people who are unable
to find a place to cool down on their own. The council is providing these cooling

else to go are welcome at the following council buildings:

first aid).

A number of community centres are air-conditioned and will be open (for extended

**Transport available via Omnibuzz**

For people who wish to travel to one of the above locations today but do not have
their own transport or a travel pass, Omnibuzz is making an exception. They can
still book a journey via Omnibuzz today by calling 0900-0699 (bookings must be made
1 hour in advance). This applies exclusively to journeys from home to the specified
locations and vice versa.

Passengers with an Omnibuzz travel pass can, of course, also book a journey. However,
they are not restricted to any of the locations mentioned above.

For enquiries about the cooling centres, residents can contact the council today
on 14043. With these measures, the council is offering a cooler alternative to those
who do not have sufficient facilities at home to escape the heat.

## **Event: 24 Hours of Maastricht (beer tasting).**

Due to the expected high temperatures and the Code Red weather warning, it has been
decided to adjust the start time of **The 24 Hours of Maastricht**.

The event will go ahead as planned, but will **not start at 14.00**, as previously
announced. The new start time is **17.00**.

With this change, the organisers aim to safeguard the safety and well-being of visitors,
stallholders, volunteers and staff as much as possible. Given the expected temperatures,
the organisers do not consider it responsible to allow the programme to begin in
the full midday sun.

Visitors are advised to drink plenty of water, wear light, breathable clothing and
take the heat into account. (source: organisers via Facebook)

On Wednesdays 1 July and 16 September 2026, the Maastricht Road Safety Group Foundation
will once again be organising two refresher courses on driving skills for the over-
50s. This course is designed to allow experienced drivers to refresh and strengthen
their road knowledge and driving skills in a relaxed and informal setting.

This is not an exam, but is about awareness, safety and confidence on the road.
The afternoons are made possible thanks to a contribution from Maastricht City Council
via the Participatory Budget, and participation is free of charge.

Each course takes place from 13:00 to 17:00 and consists of the following components:
Important to know:**You can register for the driving skills sessions** from 1 July

 * The course has **no implications for your driving licence**.
 * The results remain confidential between the participant and the instructor.
 * The aim is to enable participants to take part in traffic safely, independently
   and with confidence.

## **4. SDG Invitation**

On Friday 26 June 2026, SDG House Maastricht is once again organising an SDG Café.
This edition focuses on the Sustainable City and brings together residents, neighbourhood
initiatives, civil society organisations and the municipality to discuss the future
of Maastricht.

Maastricht faces significant challenges and opportunities in the areas of sustainability,
quality of life and climate resilience. Based on the Maastricht Environmental Vision,
work is underway to create a city that is greener, healthier and future proof. At
the same time, a sustainable city does not arise solely from policy; it is residents,
neighbourhood networks and local initiatives that play an indispensable role in
this.

During the SDG Café, we will explore together the question:

How can residents and local initiatives contribute to Maastricht as a sustainable
city?

In neighbourhoods across the city, residents are already demonstrating how sustainability
starts close to home. Think of façade gardens, community gardens, energy initiatives,
meeting places and projects that enhance the quality of life and sense of community
in the neighbourhood. These initiatives are making Maastricht greener, more social
and more resilient, step by step.

We warmly invite you to attend the SDG Café on:

Friday 26 June 2026

4.00 pm – 7.00 pm

The Social Hub Maastricht

We would also like to ask you to share this invitation within your network, for
example via your newsletter, social media, neighbourhood platform or other communication
channels. This way, together we can reach as many residents as possible who are
interested in a sustainable future for Maastricht.

Would you like to attend? You can register [here](https://forms.gle/x3Kq6dSVvFZ9o4RL9).

## **5. Bonbonnière on the way to a new lease of life**

Maastricht City Council is continuing to work on the future of the Bonbonnière.
At the end of 2025, the council approved a plan to transform the listed building
back into a vibrant and accessible space for the city.

The Bonbonnière is to become an open house where culture, amateur art, folk culture,
knowledge, debate and social initiatives come together. Residents, associations,
creators, students and organisations can meet there.

Significant steps have now been taken. The council has reached an agreement with
Heineken regarding the termination of the leasehold. As a result, the Bonbonnière
will return to the council’s management. People have also been appointed to prepare
for the redevelopment. They are working on the strategy, organisation, communication,
structural renovation and future programming.

In the coming period, work will focus on an action plan, a business case, an operational
framework, a programming vision and a step-by-step plan for the renovation. Consideration
will also be given to whether parts of the building can be opened earlier, on a
temporary and phased basis, for activities.

## **6. JekerJazz Live Art 2026**

On Sunday **21 June 2026**, **JekerJazz Live Art** will take place in the charming
Jekerkwartier in Maastricht. During this major art market, you can enjoy art, live
music and a pleasant stroll through the neighbourhood.

More than **65 artists** will be presenting their work. Admission is free.

A wonderful opportunity to discover art, meet artists and enjoy the unique atmosphere
of the Jekerkwartier.

## **7. Possible extension of the Vrijthof funfair in 2027**

The Buurtnetwerk Binnenstad has learnt that there are plans to extend the Vrijthof
fair in May 2027 on a one-off basis from 10 to 12 days. This would mean that the
fair would run from **Ascension Day, Thursday 6 May, to Whit Monday, 17 May 2027**.

There are concerns about this extension in the area around the Vrijthof. Residents
and business owners have indicated that two extra days of noise and light pollution
in the evenings are not desirable. There are also questions about what this extension
means for the so-called **60-day standard**.

## **8. Change of leadership at the City Centre Neighbourhood Network**

## In April, there was a change of leadership within the City Centre Neighbourhood Network. Khanny Jongen is the new chair. Bèr Prevot remains active on the board as vice-chair.

Frans Hermans has indicated that he wishes to step down as a board member.

Are you interested in a board position? Or would you like to contribute ideas about
the neighbourhood? Please feel free to [contact](https://binnenstadmaastricht.nl/en/newsletter-june-2026/info@buurtnetwerkbinnenstad.nl)
us.

We would like to thank Bèr for his continued dedication and Frans for his commitment
and hard work for the Buurtnetwerk Binnenstad.

Kind regards,

The board of Buurtnetwerk Binnenstad Maastricht

On behalf of the board,

Marco Maessen

is recognisable by new signs and markings on the road surface. Would you like to

The branch has around 280 members, of whom approximately 15 are active as volunteers

The new lighting under the arches of the Sint Servaasbrug is ready! This special
project not only makes the bridge more beautiful, but also more sustainable and
friendlier to animals such as bats and fish. The design is based on the idea “Sint
Servaasbrug in ‘t licht” (Sint Servaas Bridge in the light) by the late Mr Louis
Prevot and was made possible thanks to Stadsgoud, an initiative of the Elisabeth
Strouven Fund.

When: Monday, 17 November 2025, around 4 p.m.

This was our November newsletter. We wish you a pleasant autumn and hope to see
you at the Magical Table of Stars!

Dear residents and interested parties,

The topics covered in this newsletter:

 1. Halloween craft morning for children in the Hoeskamer of the Sterzaal
 2. Bus line 3 will return via the south-western part of the city centre from 2026
    onwards.
 3. A Star Table will be organised again this year.

### **1. Halloween craft morning for children in the Hoeskamer of the Sterzaal**

On **Thursday 16 October **from **10:00** **to 12:00**, the Sterzaal at **Bredestraat
19 in Maastricht **will be transformed into a creative Halloween workshop!

Children **aged 6 to 12** can enjoy making spooky masks together here. With colouring
pictures, scissors, string and a good dose of imagination, we can make the scariest
creations.

All materials are provided, and of course we will also provide some tasty treats.
🎨🍪You are welcome to come in costume — the scarier, the better!

Parents and carers are of course also welcome! Enjoy a cup of coffee while the children
get stuck into their crafts and show off their spooky creations.

Participation in this Halloween craft party is free of charge.

👉 **Register before 14 October via**: [info@hoeskamer-sterzaol.nl](https://binnenstadmaastricht.nl/en/newsletter-october-2025/info@hoeskamer-sterzaol.nl)

### **2. Bus line 3 will return via the south-western part of the city centre from 2026 onwards.**

On Tuesday evening, 30 September, the municipal council unanimously approved the
proposal by the Province and Arriva to reroute bus line 3 via Markt Zuid – Vrijthof–
Bouillonstraat – Tongersestraat from Sunday, 4 January 2026, and back via Calvariestraat–
Kommel – Helmstraat – Markt Zuid.

This decision is in line with the aim of improving the public transport structure
in the city centre, a process that began five years ago. However, concerns have
been raised about road safety, particularly around loading and unloading at the
Vrijthof. This issue deserves further attention, but the core of the problem lies
not solely with city buses, but with the broader traffic situation involving (freight)
traffic in the city centre.

This decision represents an important step towards further optimising public transport
in the city centre. In the long term, the focus will be on using smaller buses,
which will also enable the Jekerkwartier to regain a full connection.

The council’s approval is good news for many residents of south-west and north-east
Maastricht and the south-western part of the city centre, who will benefit from
improved public transport accessibility from 2026 onwards.

### **3. A Table of Stars will be organised again this year.**

The Buurtnetwerk Binnenstad (City Centre Neighbourhood Network) is organising another
Sterrentafel (Table of Stars) event this year on Thursday 11 December, in collaboration
with Koninklijke Harmonie Ster van Maastricht (Royal Harmony Star of Maastricht)(
date subject to change). We will let you know as soon as there is any news or registration
opens.
